JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITY NETBALL CLUB 2011/12

We are John Moore’s Netball Club, aka the most fun, vibrant, social and successful club of the University. Due to having two Super league players coaching us every week, we train hard but have fun at the same time.

We have three teams and a development squad so please come along whatever standard you think you are at! We also play hard, religiously going out every Wednesday on Socials in fancy dress after supporting each other in our games throughout the afternoon.

At the moment we are sponsored by Vodka Revolution which means great deals and discounts on food and drinks at any time on any day even if you’re not out with the Netball Club!

This year we are hoping to get all teams promoted to the division above what they are in already. Currently our first team is in 1A, our seconds 3A and our thirds 4B.

SOCIALS are being run throughout the year every Wednesday. This involves starting at the Union and Vodka Revolutions then onto Medication – the biggest student night in Liverpool. At Medication we also get a crate of free drinks for the Netball team, and queue jump for any member of the netball team. Now and then we also have joint socials with other JMU teams such as Rugby and Football.

WELCOME PARTY is one of the first socials of the year. This is where we ‘initiate’ all of the Fresher’s and new members to the club making them officially part of JMU Netball Club. It is a memorable, fun night which enables all members to get to know each other new and old!

TOUR (APRIL 2012) is also on the cards this year. ‘Tour’ is when all sports teams from all Universities go to one area abroad (last year it was Salou, Spain) take part in a tournament of their field and generally have an amazing time! Not to be missed – definitely one of the most memorable weeks of University life.

CHARITY EVENTS are also carried out each year, both to raise money for charities specific to people in the Club and for the Club too. This year we are hoping to do a few more after the success of some of them last year! For example we carried out ‘Take Me Out’ at our sponsors bar, Vodka Revolution, which was successful, fun and very popular. Ideas for money raising events are always welcome!

SPORTS BALL is at the end of the year which is where all of the sports teams of JMU get all dressed up, have a sit down meal, presentation and dance until the early hours. It’s always a great way to end the year and mix with the other teams.

NETBALL PRESENTATION EVENING is Netballs best night of the year. We celebrate and acknowledge all great things from the year, having both serious and funny awards and prizes! This is usually the last social of the year, which can be sad saying bye to all of those leaving! This is organised and ran by the committee.

We have 3 squads – Firsts, Seconds and Thirds. We also have a development squad to help those who want to improve do so and get closer to getting into a squad. We have two club captains (Rachel Weir and Katy Garnham-Lee) who sort out all club business and make sure everything is order. More importantly they make sure that everyone is happy and address any problems. We have two social secretaries (Adele Webster and Zoe Sumner) that organise all the Netball Socials, tour, charity events and anything else on the social side of the club.
Gemma Miller is our treasurer. She is in charge of all funding, subs, transport, umpires etc – basically all money going in/out of the club. If you think you or someone you know may want to sponsor our club please contact Gemma. As you can imagine the cost of running a Netball Club is very expensive and although our union support us, any extra money would be great as it all goes back into the club and making it better. Felicity Ayre is our secretary who sorts out all paper work and gets umpires organised for home games.

At the moment we train twice a week, Tuesday 6pm-8pm at IM Marsh and Sundays 3pm-5pm also at IM Marsh. We understand Sundays can be difficult to attend because of jobs etc however please still come along as we can still accommodate you and your other commitments. Please note these times may be changing for September. We do take commitment very seriously as it can be unfair on other members and also on those running the sessions, however this will all be made clearer in September. We play on Wednesdays both home (IM Marsh) and away, this is a great day of the week where we all watch and support each other – usually sat making fancy dress outfits on the side line! Also due to being a member of the Netball Club, we are going to receive free off-peak gym memberships at Lifestyles Gym where you can go in any Lifestyles Gym in Liverpool. Or for a small fee of £5 per month you can get an any time pass instead of just off-peak. I’m sure you can appreciate how great value these are! So we may be running some club gym sessions too.
As stated before, running a club is very expensive, so on joining JMU Netball Club there will be some joining fees and subs (which we pay in bulk at the start of each semester instead of x amount each week) to cover training sessions, transport to away games, playing kit, training equipment etc etc. More information of this will be given out at trials when we know how much it will be.
Please look out for us at Fresher Fairs at the Haigh Building during Fresher’s Week! We’re looking forward to meeting you! 
